History

On 16th April 1853, India’s First Train ran. It ran from Bombay to Thane.

India’s first rail track was built by two Indians – Jaganath Shunkerseth and Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy. 

Average 30 million passengers per day

Everyday average 30 million passengers use rails as a transport medium. It is the greater number than the population of Australia. From April 2017 to March 2018, 8.26 billion passengers and transport 1.16 billion tonnes of freight transported by Indian Railways.

World’s biggest employer list

Indian Railways ranked on 8th place in the list of world’s biggest employer. 1.4 million (March 2015) employees are working with Indian Railways.

17 Zones

India is so big that Indian Railways is divided into seventeen (17) zones for smooth operations.

22,200 trains per day

Every single day 22,200 trains run in which 13000 are the passenger trains and 9,200 are freight (malgaddi) trains.

Passenger trains run at the average speed of 50.6 kilometres per hour (31.4 mph) and freight (malgaddi) trains runs at the average speed of 24 kilometres per hour (15 mph).

Slowest train in India run at a speed of  10 kilometres per hour (6.2 miles per hour). The train is called Metupalayam Ooty Nilgiri Passenger.

Fastest Train

Gatimaan Express (New Delhi to Agra) is the fastest train in India. The train runs at the speed of 188 kilometres per hour (116.818 miles per hour )
